Teaching

I am the Director of Study for Counselling and have been teaching on the Bexhill College Diploma in Counselling Course since its inception eight years ago and have been its principle tutor for the last three years. The course has recently been described as a centre of excellence. See below for details of the course.

I have ten years experience of teaching counselling from introductory through to professional level as well as running workshops. My background in teaching counselling is from a Humanist Integrative approach, incorporating Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Transactional Analysis. Teaching both theory and the practical and experiential aspects of the subjects.

I also teach Psychoanalytic and Cognitive theory where it is applicable within the broader therapeutic framework, I am available to teach on workshops and on counselling related topics.

Workshops

Workshops areas include: - Gestalt Experiential
Games People Play – Transactional Analysis
Listening and communicating skills
Bereavement and practical helping skills
The workshops are run in an experiential way drawing on our own life experiences with practical based exercises backed up with theory.

Diploma in Counselling - Bexhill College

The Diploma in Counselling at Bexhill College in East Sussex has been running since September 2001 and has built up a reputation for producing highly competent and ethical practitioners. It provides a useful alternative and addition to counselling courses on the south coast of England.

The course is Humanistic in orientation and focuses on an integration of Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and Transactional Analysis.

Teaching in the first year is centred on Students learning the individual philosophies,  approaches and practices of these therapies as well as acquiring and developing and integrating the necessary skills. Petrushka Clarkson’s five levels of the therapeutic relationship will also be examined in detail looking at the various stages that  a counselling relationship will progress through. Students will also be taught the ethics and boundaries associated with safe and ethical practice. The course works within the BACP Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

In the second year students are encouraged to develop their practice to become reflective practitioners, integrating the core skills and philosophies into a cohesive approach which reflects the individuals own personality and style. Within the humanistic tradition the most important resource is the therapist themselves and the teaching is designed to reflect this. In addition the wider contextual framework in which the humanistic tradition has developed is examined. Theories from Psychoanalysis such as the Object relations school are taught alongside Winnicott’s ‘holding’ and Bion’s ‘containing’. Cognitive therapies are also looked at, in particular, the time-limited therapies of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Students are required to undertake a counselling placement in a voluntary agency completing 120 hours of counselling and at least 20 hours of supervision. In addition to this 40 hours of personal therapy have to be completed.

Course Fees.

At Bexhill College costs are about half that of comparable courses although because of the personal therapy element a substantial financial commitment is still required.

Currently course fees are £1560 for the first year (Including £133 Board registration fees and £60 College deposit) and £1367 for the second year. With regard to personal therapy, therapists do advertise within the college, some offer discounted rates for students.

Transport Links.

The course is situated at Jameson Mews, just off Jameson Road in Bexhill five minutes from Bexhill train station. It takes about an hour to travel from Brighton and from Tunbridge Wells making it a useful option for the south-east of England.
